Gilgit: The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) Assembly has unanimously called on the federal government to establish a special green fund to protect the region’s glaciers and fragile ecosystem from the growing impacts of climate change.
The demand was made through a resolution adopted by the assembly, which described climate change as a serious threat to the region and future generations.
The resolution urged the federal government to create the fund to support glacier conservation, environmental protection, clean water projects and waste management initiatives. It also called on the ministries of climate change, water resources and planning to formulate a comprehensive glacier protection plan.
In addition, the assembly sought compensation, water rights and water royalty for Gilgit-Baltistan through development packages, arguing that the region contributes significantly to the country’s freshwater resources.
During the debate, lawmakers highlighted the rapid melting of glaciers and stressed the need for stronger climate adaptation measures. They also raised concerns over environmental degradation caused by tourism, unplanned construction and increasing traffic, saying these factors have intensified glacier melt and heightened flood risks in downstream areas.
The assembly also called for an investigation into climate change funds allocated for the region to ensure their effective utilisation.
